The whole tooth
28 April 2008
Brace yourselves -- Sheffield was named as the city in the UK where people have the worst teeth.
Residents in the South Yorkshire city have more fillings, more missing teeth and brush them less frequently than anywhere else in the country.
According to a poll the average Sheffield resident has had five fillings and has lost another five teeth.
They spend the least amount of time brushing their teeth - just one minute and 25 seconds. On top of that they are also most likely to skip their nightly tooth clean.
Plymouth, Newcastle and Aberdeen also feature highly in the tooth poll of shame.
Katrina Hardy, Operations Director of Genix Healthcare, which carried out the survey, said: ''It's amazing to see how many people fail to brush their teeth regularly - especially those in Sheffield.
''This research really highlights which areas of the country really need to improve on their dental hygiene.
''It's so important to brush your teeth at least twice a day - morning and evening as well as visiting the dentist for check-ups regularly.
''By taking a few minutes each day to brush properly you can ensure you have a healthy mouth and smile.''
The poll, of 2,000 people, revealed that people in Brighton have the best gnashers, with an average of just two fillings and only two missing teeth.
Cardiff came second, with three fillings and missing teeth, followed by Cambridge, Leicester and Southampton.
And according to the study, Southampton is also home to the Brits with the worst breath, while Brummies have the best breath.
It also found that York residents are most likely to suffer from inflamed gums and bleeding after brushing, while Edinburgh people endure toothache the most.
Worryingly, a whopping 29 per cent of people from Portsmouth admit they never go to the dentist, along with 14 per cent of York folk.
Katrina added: ''A shortage of NHS places for dental patients and the cost of treatment may help to explain the numbers of people who never visit a dentist (8%) or only visit a dentist when a problem with their teeth occur (17%).''
The research also revealed that people in Norwich are most embarrassed about the state of their teeth, while those in Edinburgh are the happiest with their smile.
