A dental implant is a titanium rod placed inside the jawbone; one or more false teeth can then be screwed into the rod. This offers a permanent fixed solution to missing or lost teeth.
Dental implants require a small operation to fix the titanium rod in place under local anaesthetic with sedation or a general anaesthetic and will require only a few stitches. The implants need to bond/integrate with the bone after they are put in and this usually takes 3 months on lower jaw implants and 6 months on upper jaw implants. During this period temporary teeth are screwed in place until the rod is ready to accept your permanent false teeth.
Dental implants can be maintained in much the same way as your own teeth, they have been known to last at least 15 years whilst giving you a natural healthy look.
