Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment involves the moving and realigning of teeth for both cosmetic and health reasons. An orthodontist will improve the appearance of your teeth whilst adding to the long term health of teeth, gums and jaw joints by helping to spread the biting pressure more equally across all teeth in your mouth.

Treatment involves a full examination including x-rays and moulds of your existing teeth. The dentist and orthodontist will then need to discuss the best course of treatment. Once the patient has agreed with the suggested course of treatment, it will usually involve an appliance often known as a brace being fitted to the teeth.

This is a long term course of treatment and usually takes between one to two years but can be shorter and longer depending on the current condition of your teeth.

Orthodontic treatment is more commonly carried out on children but is increasingly popular with adults who missed out on treatment when they were younger. Orthodontic treatment can repair teeth which are crooked and crowded. It is best carried out on children as they are still growing and realigning their teeth is much easier, however treatment may have to wait if they still have adult teeth growing out.
